After the Liberation War in 1971, The Christian Organization for Relief and Rehabilitation (CORR) took up massive relief and reconstruction program. The CORR (Renamed as Caritas Bangladesh in 1976) brought fleet of trucks, power tillers and irrigation equipments to implement its relief and rehabilitation works in the rural areas of Bangladesh. It was realized at a certain point that acute.

C shortage of skilled hands for repair and maintenance of the equipments is causing enormous difficulties in keeping those functioning. In view of such a situation, it was planned to set up a center where rural youths will be trained to carry out the maintenance works. A group of Swiss Engineers were engaged to oversee the works. In 1973 both Caritas Bangladesh and Caritas Switzerland joined hands to set up the workshop in MOhakhali, which is widely know as IAST. To carry out the activities independently and fulfill the objectives and vision, in July 2008 the institution has been transformed into a TRUST and all its operation and management handed over to the Board of Trustees.

Background of IAST

After setting up all the machinery and equipment as well as preparing the training syllabus, the training program started in 1998 on some Basic trades with only 20 trainees. Besides this main training program short term courses for operating and servicing of diesel engines were conducted. To provide employable skill to the trainees in the different trades, a well equipped production unit has been set up to introduce on-the-job training. The secondary objective of the production unit is to generate income. The surplus from modular activity was earmarked to support the training activities of IAST. The production unit is strictly a commercial operation. No outside financial support is extended towards this activity. The management of IAST is presently exploring different possibilities to find a more stable financial position for the training activities and in the long run to establish a self-sustainable operation. The financial support necessary for the training has already been shifted from external sources to local sources.
